Happy children in comfortable, colourful cotton clothing

Kids don’t care what brand they’re wearing. They care about three things: Can I run in it? Does it itch? Will you be angry if I spill dal on it?

As a parent, your priorities are slightly different: Is it safe on their skin? Will it survive the washing machine? Does it look decent for at least one outing before the inevitable stain?

Here’s a practical fabric guide based on what we’ve learned from thousands of parents shopping at Sheetal Readymade.

The Golden Rule: Skin First

Children’s skin — especially for kids under 7 — is significantly more sensitive than adult skin. Fabrics that feel fine to you might cause rashes, itching, or discomfort for them.

Always prioritise:

  • Natural fibres (cotton, muslin, bamboo)
  • Soft textures with no rough seams or tags
  • Breathable weaves that don’t trap heat
  • Clothes that have been washed at least once before first wear (to remove factory chemicals)

Best Fabrics for Kids

1. Pure Cotton — The Default Choice

If you remember nothing else from this article: when in doubt, buy cotton.

  • Soft on sensitive skin
  • Breathable in Sitapur’s heat
  • Absorbs sweat without feeling clammy
  • Gets softer with every wash
  • Affordable and widely available
  • Takes colour well (those bright prints kids love)

Best cotton types for kids: Hosiery cotton (for t-shirts and inner wear), knitted cotton (for flexibility), cambric cotton (for kurtas and dresses).

2. Muslin / Mulmul — The Premium Pick

If you can find kids’ clothes in muslin or mulmul cotton, grab them.

  • Ultra-soft and lightweight
  • Superior breathability
  • Perfect for summer and newborns
  • Hypoallergenic

Downside: More delicate than regular cotton. May not survive aggressive play as well.

3. Cotton-Lycra Blend — For Active Kids

Pure cotton doesn’t stretch much. For kids who are constantly climbing, jumping, and running (so, all of them), a cotton-lycra blend (95% cotton, 5% lycra/spandex) offers:

  • Cotton’s comfort and breathability
  • Stretch for unrestricted movement
  • Better shape retention after washing
  • Slightly more durable than pure cotton

Best for: T-shirts, leggings, play clothes.

4. Khadi Cotton — For Special Occasions

Handspun, handwoven khadi is gentle, breathable, and has a beautiful texture. It works well for:

  • Ethnic wear (kurtas, small sherwanis)
  • Republic Day / Independence Day outfits
  • Any occasion where you want the outfit to look “special”

Note: Khadi wrinkles easily. Accept it as part of the charm.

Fabrics to Avoid for Kids

Polyester

The most common offender. Polyester is cheap, so it shows up in a lot of kids’ clothing — especially printed t-shirts and festive wear.

Problems: Traps heat, causes sweating, can trigger skin rashes, builds static. In UP summers, polyester on a kid is a recipe for crankiness.

Exception: Small amounts of polyester in blends (under 30%) are generally fine and add durability.

Nylon

Same issues as polyester. Non-breathable, heat-trapping. Avoid for everyday wear.

Wool (for young kids)

Wool can be itchy on sensitive skin. If you need winter layers, opt for cotton fleece or use a cotton inner layer under wool.

Stiff Fabrics (Brocade, Heavy Silk, Stiff Net)

These appear in festive kids’ wear and are the reason children hate wedding outfits. They restrict movement, can scratch skin, and are not washable.

If you must: Choose soft silk or light brocade, and ensure there’s a cotton lining against the skin.

Fabric Checklist When Shopping

Use this at the store:

  • Touch it: Does it feel soft against the inside of your wrist? (Your wrist skin is closer in sensitivity to a child’s skin)
  • Stretch it gently: Does it have some give? Rigid fabrics restrict active kids.
  • Check the label: 100% cotton or cotton-blend with at least 70% cotton
  • Check the seams: Are they flat and smooth? Raised or rough seams cause irritation.
  • Check for tags: Internal tags that will scratch the neck. If present, you’ll need to cut them carefully.
  • Smell it: Strong chemical smell = unwashed factory chemicals. Wash before wearing.

Season-Specific Recommendations

Summer (March – September in Sitapur/Biswan)

  • Best: Pure cotton, muslin, cotton-lycra
  • Avoid: Polyester, nylon, anything non-breathable
  • Colour tip: Light colours absorb less heat. Save the dark navy for winter.

Winter (November – February)

  • Best: Cotton fleece, velvet (cotton-backed), layered cotton
  • Avoid: Direct wool on skin, synthetic fleece for extended indoor wear
  • Layering tip: Multiple thin cotton layers work better than one thick synthetic layer. Easier to adjust as the day warms up.

Monsoon (July – September)

  • Best: Quick-drying cotton-blend, cotton-lycra
  • Avoid: Heavy cotton that stays damp, fabrics that smell when wet (usually synthetics)
  • Practical tip: Stock extra t-shirts during monsoon. Kids will go through 2-3 a day.

How Many Clothes Does a Kid Actually Need?
